The Hippie movement started to grow in the 60s. It was a group that didn’t trust the government. They did not want to hurt someone, and “Peace and love” was the motto to hippies. Therefore they wanted to stop the war in Vietnam. And the demonstrations against the government were peaceful. The long hair and the use of illegal drugs were to show that people won’t be told how to look and live. Marijuana was the drug the hippies used very much. The hippies loved music too. It was many hippies at Woodstock, a big musical festival.

On October 21 1967, the hippies demonstrated in Washington D.C. They demonstrated against the Vietnam War, and wanted to stop it. It was a peaceful demonstration, and over 100 000 people gathered together for this demonstration. It wasn’t just the hippies that wanted to get the soldiers out of Vietnam, but most of the Americans also wanted that. In the end of the war everybody demonstrated against the war, and the president (Gerald Ford) pulled the troops out. The hippies were a part of the end of the Vietnam war (1975). Martin Luther King Jr was also against the war in Vietnam.
Here are two videos of the protest in Washington, against the war in Vietnam.
The Hippies' Clothes
It was many things the hippies were known for. One of these things was their clothes. The girls in the 60s wore dresses with different patterns, e.g. polka dot and others, but the hippiegirls didn't wear that. In the 60s it was also popular with miniskirt, and when the girls got miniskirts they often was out dancing whit friends or their boyfriends, but the hippies didn’t wear that so often. They had flowers in their hair, long T-shirts, long shirts, bell bottom jeans and a lot more.
Flower Power
Flower power was one of the hippies’ slogan in the 60s. And the reason why they selected exactly that phrase was that the love symbol symbolized flowers, but the society was based upon weapon and money. Flower power was a subcultural protest movement. Most known because of the love and peace it gave to many people. The movement spread all over the world. And flower power was an explosion of color, fashion, music and politics.
Drug use
The hippies undertook the largest uncontrolled experiment
in drug use in the history of the mankind. The most used were: marihuana/cannabis, LSD, magic mushrooms, mescaline and other types of drugs. They used it because they wanted to protest against society. Many musicians used drugs too. They became creative when they used drugs, and some wanted to block out the world and get in to their own world.

He was once married to a girl named Rosalie Willis (1955-1958). And later he married Candy Stevens. There is no facts about Candy Stevens, but some people say that she used candy stevens as pseudonym, because she was a prostitute.
